May 19-23: IAEA May Release Report on Iran’s Nuclear Program

Later this week, the IAEA may release its latest report on the status of Iran’s nuclear program for the IAEA Board of Governors, as well as its monthly report on the implementation of the November Joint Action Agreement between the P5+1 (China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) and Iran over its nuclear program.

The report is expected to provide more information on Iran’s progress toward full-filling the additional seven steps  to the Iran-IAEA Framework for Cooperation that the two parties Iran agreed upon during a February 7 meeting.

May 19-23: Congressional Actions on Defense Authorization Legislation

The House of Representatives is expected to bring H.R. 4435, defense authorization bill to the floor for a full vote this week, and the Senate version, S. 2289, is expected to be marked up  by the Senate Armed Services Committee this week too. However, it is not clear when the bill will come to the Senate floor for a vote.

The House version of the Defense Authorization Bill includes provisions calling for the acceleration missile defense deployment in Europe as part of the European Phased Adaptive Approach and raise questions about implementation of the New START Treaty. For a critical perspective on the issue, see Arms Control Association Research Director Tom Z. Collina’s May 15 oped in The Hill, “On Ukraine, Don’t Make a Bad Situation Worse.”
